Varnasrama College
Srila Prabhupada spoke many times about setting up the 'Varnasrama College' style of education, where children above the age of 11 can have access to individual vocational (varna) education based on their own inherent natures.
The SMIS vocational strand is our attempt to fuliffl this instruction of Srila Prabhupada, as well as a practical response to our own experience that a purely academic education is not suitable for many students. The vocational strand is also geared towards giving the students real life skills that they can use to attain meaningful engagement or paid service within or outside of ISKCON. In particular, we are aiming to provide skills needed by the Mayapur Departments, so that students may smoothly transition from school into maintained devotional engagement within Mayapur, if that is their desire.
In this way, SMIS is helping to develop the next generation of spiritual leaders, pujaris, cooks, managers etc. of the ISKCON society.
While we do not label students as belonging solely to a particular varna, we give the students options to pursure whichever various vocational subjects that they are suited to.
The four varnas and their duties are:
Courses offered
We are developing courses in the following subject areas. Courses with stars are currently offered at SMIS. The varna designation of each course is shown after the name (B for brahmanical, K for Ksatriya etc.)
On successful completion of each course, students are awarded a 'Certificate of Excellence' or 'Certificate of Competence' for that course.
